United Airlines Announces Fleet Update

CHICAGO, July 16, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — United Airlines (UAL) today announced orders to purchase 25 new Embraer E-175 and 4 new Boeing 787-9 aircraft. United expects to take delivery of the Embraer E-175 aircraft in 2019 and expects to take delivery of the Boeing 787-9 aircraft in 2020.

The 25 new E-175 aircraft will replace 25 CRJ-700 aircraft currently being flown by our United Express partners. These new E-175 purchases will allow United to offer a more comfortable and efficient aircraft to its customers.

The new 787-9 aircraft are part of United’s widebody fleet replacement strategy. The 787-9 is the longest-range version of the aircraft, while using 20 percent less fuel than older-generation aircraft. It will offer the airline’s all-new United Polaris business class seats and other modern amenities to provide a superior onboard experience to United’s customers.

“These new 787 aircraft are another step in our widebody replacement strategy, and we will continue to roll out new announcements in the future as we implement our comprehensive fleet plan,” said Gerry Laderman, United’s senior vice president of finance and acting chief financial officer. “The new E-175 aircraft will provide our customers with a superior product that offers the latest in onboard amenities and comfort and will be a terrific addition to our fleet.”

Today’s announcement does not change UAL’s previous adjusted capital expenditure guidance. The company will continue to evaluate opportunities to purchase used aircraft.

United Airlines forced to backtrack on unpopular menu change

Drinks on a flight. Tomato juice and water glass on a table in an airplane.

UNITED Airlines has been at the centre of a number of jaw-dropping scandals recently.

There was the infamous incident last year in which a doctor was dragged off his flight after he refused to give up the seat he had paid for.

There was the socialite who was kicked out of business class, the passenger who was sent to the wrong city, and most recently, the carrier sparked international condemnation over the death of a beloved pet that was forced to endure a flight in the overhead baggage compartment.

Now, United — the fourth biggest airline in the world — has found itself at the centre of another social media storm: this time, over tomato juice.

Last week, United announced it was ditching the beverage from its drinks menu on US domestic flights of less than four hours, due to an adjustment to its in-flight catering arrangements.

It might have assumed few people would care. But boy, was it wrong.

When it made the announcement, the reaction from passengers on social media was swift and brutal.

Unhappy passengers vowed never to fly United again while others said the move left them “deeply saddened”.

Their outrage may have been justified: tomato juice is believed to actually taste better in the sky.

United Airlines Just Started the Longest Nonstop Flight From the United States

United Airlines launched the longest nonstop flight to or from the U.S.

The flight, which was scheduled to run from Los Angeles International Airport to Singapore’s Changi Airport, covers a distance of about 8,700 miles (or about 7,560 nautical miles), according to United (ual, -0.47%). The flight is expected to take between 15 hours and nearly 18 hours.

The airline first announced the flight in June. Roughly a year earlier, United announced the first flight between San Francisco and Singapore. That flight tallied 8,446 miles.

“Our commitment to our Los Angeles hub is more than 50 years strong and with today’s new Singapore service announcement, we continue to strengthen our position as the leading U.S. carrier to Asia,” Dave Hilfman, United’s senior vice president of worldwide sales said at the time.

Based off of data from OAG, an airline data provider, the United flight between Los Angeles and Singapore is the third longest in the world by mileage in 2017.

United food scientists went back to the drawing board to create a new cheeseburger that it will roll out starting November 1.

“It started with the great burger you like and we found a great, new bread by, Brooklyn-based Company, “Brooklyn Bred” (you’ll recognize some of their breads if you frequent Starbucks …) and we are partnering with Sir Kensington’s – on new condiments too. The new burger patty comes from the same place as the current one – it’s all beef! The cheese is Smoked Gouda, with condiments and Sir Kensington mustard, ketchup and mayo.

United Airlines Gives Up on Duty Free

In a bid to spur more duty free sales last year, United Airlines created a program that allowed non-traveling customers to surprise family or friends on international flights by sending them gifts delivered by a flight attendant. United recommended consumers use the service to say, “congratulations,” “happy birthday,” or “I love you,” and promised to deliver gifts in a special bag with a personalized card.

It was an intriguing idea —United even got some media buzz from it — but it was not enough to save the airline’s duty free program.

United, which has been working with a company called Duty Free World, said this week it will stop boarding duty free items on March 31. It will be the last of the three major U.S. airline to close its shop, following Delta Air Lines, which folded its operation in 2014, and American Airlines, which shut its down in 2015. Other North American airlines, including Hawaiian Air and Air Canada, continue to sell duty free items.

Duty free still serves a purpose, mainly for airlines that invest heavily in promoting and marketing the service. Korean Air has a duty free shop in the rear of its Airbus A380 economy class section that’s so big it kept the airline from installing as many seats on the aircraft as normal. And Qatar Airways, which also takes duty free seriously, earned more than a half of billion dollars in revenue from its duty free program in 2015, according to a report from IdeaWorksCompany.

United Airlines to add Denver flights as part of expansion plan

DALLAS — United Airlines, which lost the distinction of being the world’s biggest carrier after shrinking for several years, plans to regain lost ground by adding more flights from key airports this summer.

That includes Denver International Airport, where United will add non-stop service to two new destinations, launch daily summer service to Hawaii and increase the frequency of flights to four other cities, the airline announced Monday.

The new service to Columbia, Mo. and San Luis Obispo, Calif. is expected to launch this summer, around the same time the airline launches daily summer service to Kona, Hawaii. Markets that will see more flights from DIA are Albuquerque, N.M.; Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Tampa, Fla.
